Birds of the Desert

Gila Woodpecker on Saguaro_edited-1

This is a Gila Woodpecker on a blooming saguaro at the Desert Botanical Garden. Last weekend was beautiful for this time of year in Phoenix, the low 80s, breezy, and sunny so we went to the garden and took about 400 photos! That’s enough for a few more posts…

I don’t know what this little bird with the ruffled feathers is…

But we saw plenty of Gambel’s Quail. This couple was foraging for food.

Quail lay eggs on the ground but this is a male so I’m not sure what he was up to.

We lucked out and had an elusive roadrunner right by us at the café. I found out later that there is a nest close by with 2 chicks in it.

He or she seemed a little flustered at all the paparazzi and fluffed up his/her feathers for us before wandering off.

Beep…beep.

  1. Candace, these are wonderful! You’re quite the bird lady 🙂 I especially like the first three images. Beautifully captured!
    Happy weekend to you.
