Well, the WordPress snow is now falling again so I guess I should venture out of my yard and post something more seasonal. Besides, my stats are way down~I guess everyone is busy with the holidays. I’ve begun my shopping and we’ve started attending holiday parties and events.
These shots are from ZooLights at the Phoenix Zoo, an annual event featuring 3.6 million lights and 700 light displays. The organization I work for reserves a November night right before Zoolights opens to the public every year for employees, their families, and guests to attend privately. There were still several thousand people there but it was less crowded than it is on a normal ZooLights night.
I posted about this same event 3 years ago and the shots are better than these. Check them out!
This year they had a new and awesome display…Music in Motion, synchronized to 15,000 lights and including a dozen 12-foot-tall floating light tubes, 26 dancing trees that surround the lake, and a 24-foot-diameter shimmering sphere that changed color continuously. I guess I consider this event the kick-off of our holiday season. See a few more festive shots in the slideshow below.
I hope you’re having a fun holiday season so far, too!
Best time to shoot the moon handheld? Daytime! I love when the moon is out in the day.
Best place to have a cup of coffee while you mural-watch?
White Sage Espresso on Calle 16! Plus one of the owners is a psychic and I heard they did a ritualistic burning of white sage upon moving into this quaint 1920’s bungalow. Too bad they’re not open on Sundays, though.
Best place to watch snacks on wings (which they rarely try to actually catch, fortunately)?
“In the shade of the silk oak tree,” says Grady, perfectly camouflaged.
Her sister, Stripey, concurs.
Best place (not) to take a nap when it’s over 100 out? Leave it to Google.
Best thing to accompany my Lalo Cota paintings?
Breeze’s Monarch, which is now mine! Since they collaborate so much, I felt I needed a piece by Thomas Breeze Marcus, too.
Best tequila bottles ever for someone who loves Day of the Dead stuff? Kah! They cost a bundle, though. Fun website, too.
One of America’s best colleges/universities?
Arizona State University, my alma mater! Also the biggest public university campus in the US? Arizona State University’s Tempe Campus with a 2011 fall enrollment of 59,794! And that is just one of 4 ASU campuses in the metro Phoenix area. Total 2011 ASU enrollment? 72,254…making it the largest public university in the US by enrollment. These photos were taken at the downtown Phoenix campus, which did not exist yet when I went to ASU decades ago.
Best app for making a mediocre photo kinda funky? Poladroid, as seen in the 2nd photo of this post.

Okay, my life must be really boring if I’m making a blog post out of this but I like some of the photos. And it has been literally decades since I’ve been in this kind of car wash, where you stay in the car. I thought I’d save a few bucks and try this one out instead of the one I normally go to.
So join me on my little whitewater adventure. Hope you’re not claustrophobic.
There, doesn’t she sparkle?
I’ve been on a little blog break for a few days because I have the lingering crud that seems to be going around here. I missed a couple days of work and don’t remember a lot of last week but I think I’m coming back to the land of the living soon…
Marbles with the Nikon D80.
Google with the Olympus fe-4020.
Abbey with the Casio Exilim EX-S200.
…All culminating (after the last photo) in a minor trauma involving bushy tails, hissing, growling, chasing, coughing, and cat barfing. All is now well after a brief timeout, cleanup, and some treats.
